Symptoms

  • Puddles of oily fluid under the middle of the car
  • Jerky or delayed gear shifts (especially from 1st to 2nd)
  • Transmission warning message if fluid gets critically low

Root Cause

The ZF8 gearbox sump is made of plastic with an integrated filter. Thermal cycling causes the plastic to warp, breaking the seal on the rubber gasket.

How To Fix

  1. The sump pan and filter are a single unit and must be replaced together.
  2. Drain fluid, replace pan/filter (£80 part).
  3. Refill with exact spec ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid (£20/litre, needs ~6 litres).
  4. Fluid must be filled at a specific temperature (40°C - 50°C) using diagnostics.
  5. Total cost at specialist: £350-500
