Symptoms

  • EML warning light
  • Power loss, especially 1,500-2,500 RPM
  • Rough idle and hunting
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • P0400, P0401 or P0403 fault codes

Root Cause

The EGR system recirculates exhaust gas for emissions compliance. In low-speed urban use the valve gets coated in carbon. The 1.5 TDCi's compact intake manifold is particularly prone to carbon restriction.

How To Fix

  1. Remove EGR valve (2 bolts + electrical connector)
  2. Soak in EGR cleaner, scrub with wire brush, blow dry
  3. Clean intake manifold passages with carb cleaner and pipe brushes
  4. Replacement EGR: £80-200 pattern, £300 OEM
  5. Full job at indie: £200-350
