Honda Civic Mk8 2.2 i-CTDi — Exhaust Manifold Cracking
A very well-known issue on Honda's 2.2 diesel. The steel exhaust manifold cracks, leaking toxic exhaust fumes directly into the cabin vents.

OBD Codes
None
Symptoms
- Very strong smell of diesel exhaust fumes in the cabin
- Hissing or ticking noise from the engine under load
- Black soot around the turbo area on the bulkhead side
Root Cause
The factory exhaust manifold was made of thin pressed steel. The heat cycling from the turbocharger causes the metal to fatigue and crack along the welds.
How To Fix
- Honda extended the warranty for this issue to 7 years/125,000 miles (which has now expired for all Mk8s).
- Replace the manifold with the revised cast-iron version.
- Requires removing the turbocharger to access. Very labour intensive.
- Cost fitted at an indie: £500-700

Other Faults on This Variant
Premature Clutch Slipping
SevereDespite being a brilliant engine, the clutch fitted to the 2.2 i-CTDi cannot handle the 340Nm of torque. It slips prematurely, especially in 4th, 5th, and 6th gears.
Air Conditioning Condenser Leak (Stone Damage)
MinorThe air conditioning condenser is mounted at the very front of the cooling pack, making it highly susceptible to stone damage from the road, leading to refrigerant loss.
Front Anti-Roll Bar Drop Link Wear
MinorThe front anti-roll bar drop links wear out on heavily potholed UK roads, causing an annoying knocking sound at low speeds.
