Symptoms

  • Loud humming or droning noise from the rear, sounding like a bad wheel bearing
  • Noise increases with road speed, peaks around 40-50mph
  • Metal shavings in the rear diff oil

Root Cause

The factory-fitted nose bearing in the rear differential wears prematurely. The pre-load on the bearing from the factory was often incorrect.

How To Fix

  1. If caught early, a specialist can replace just the pinion bearing and re-shim the diff (£350-500)
  2. If left too long, the metal shavings destroy the crown wheel and pinion, requiring a fully reconditioned differential (£800-1,200)
  3. Change diff oil every 40k miles to prolong life
