Skoda Octavia Mk2 2.0 TDI 140bhp PDHigh Pressure Fuel Pump Cam Follower Wear

The Octavia Mk2 TDI PD engine shares the VAG cam follower weakness. Because Octavias are often high-mileage fleet or family cars, this issue is widespread — and many used cars are sold without the seller knowing the cam lobe is destroyed.

Symptoms

  • Hard starting when cold
  • Rough running under load
  • Fuel pressure fault codes (P0087)
  • No visible symptoms until camshaft is destroyed
  • HPFP failure — car won't start

Root Cause

Identical to Golf Mk5 and A3 8P — VAG PD engine cam follower wearing through to camshaft. This engine is in the Octavia, Golf, A3, Passat, Leon — all share this fault.

How To Fix

  1. Pre-purchase: inspect follower BEFORE buying any 2.0 TDI PD
  2. Remove HPFP dust cap, check follower condition
  3. Replace follower at 20,000-mile intervals
  4. If camshaft damaged: camshaft replacement or replacement engine
  5. Budget: £15-30 (preventative) to £1,500+ (camshaft damaged)
