Symptoms

  • Visible orange rust on rear axle beam
  • Squeaking from rear over bumps
  • MOT advisory or failure for corrosion
  • Rear handling feels vague

Root Cause

Unpainted or inadequately protected steel on the rear axle is attacked by road salt. The beam's box sections and trailing arms corrode from inside. High-mileage cars with no underbody treatment are worst affected.

How To Fix

  1. Annual underseal or Waxoyl treatment is the best prevention
  2. Light surface rust: wire brush, rust converter, chassis paint
  3. Structural beam corrosion: replacement axle beam (salvage: £100-200, new: £400+)
  4. Always address before MOT rather than after failure
