Vauxhall Corsa Corsa D 1.3 CDTi 75bhp — EGR Valve Failure and Carbon Build-Up
The Fiat/GM 1.3 CDTi is a capable diesel but its EGR valve blocks with carbon deposits regularly. This is one of the most common Corsa D complaints.

OBD Codes

Typical layout and location for the EGR assembly.
Symptoms
- EML warning light
- Reduced power / limp mode
- Rough idle and hesitation
- Increased fuel consumption
- White or black smoke
- OBD codes P0400, P0401 or P1401
Root Cause
The EGR system recirculates exhaust gases back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions. Over time, carbon from the exhaust coats the valve and intake manifold, eventually causing the valve to stick. Worse on city-driven cars.
How To Fix
- Remove EGR valve — usually 2 bolts and one electrical connector on this engine
- Soak in EGR/carb cleaner for 30 minutes and scrub with a brush
- Clean the intake manifold passages with carb cleaner and long pipe brushes
- Refit or replace valve — OEM Fiat/Vauxhall £120, pattern from £40
- Consider fitting an EGR blanking plate (note: may cause MOT failure if lambda checked)

Other Faults on This Variant
Diesel Particulate Filter Blockage
ModerateDPF blockage is endemic on the 1.3 CDTi Corsa, largely because most owners use them for short trips where the DPF cannot self-clean.
EGR Valve Seized Open
ModerateThe EGR valve on the 1.3 CDTi clogs rapidly, usually jamming open and causing terrible starting and idling.
Timing Chain Snapping
CriticalThe 1.3 CDTi engine uses a weak single-row timing chain. It stretches and snaps without much warning if oil changes are missed.
