Symptoms

  • Smell of diesel in the cabin
  • Rising engine oil level on dipstick
  • Hard starting after sitting overnight
  • Poor braking performance (hard pedal due to vacuum leak)

Root Cause

The seals inside the tandem pump fail. External leaks drip onto the coolant hoses below, destroying the rubber. Internal leaks dilute the engine oil, leading to major bearing damage if ignored.

How To Fix

  1. Inspect pump (right side of cylinder head) for wet diesel
  2. Check coolant hoses below for swelling
  3. Repair kits (gaskets) available for £30, but replacement pump often better (£150-250)
  4. MUST change engine oil if internal leak suspected
  5. Total fitted cost: £250-400
