Symptoms

  • Juddering when pulling away, especially on hills
  • Vibration through clutch pedal
  • Rattling from bellhousing at idle
  • Clunking on gear changes

Root Cause

The DMF absorbs diesel engine vibrations through internal spring dampers. These lose their damping capacity over time. Towing, driving with low fuel (runs hotter), and riding the clutch all accelerate wear.

How To Fix

  1. Confirm DMF wear: rattling disappears when clutch pedal depressed
  2. Replace DMF and clutch kit together — never fit a new clutch to a worn DMF
  3. LuK or Sachs DMF + clutch kits recommended
  4. Labour: 4-5 hours. Total: £600-1,000 at indie
